#basic knowledge
- Basic Kit (Example) -??
- Full Unenchanted diamond armour - Unenchanted Shield - Diamond Sword - Diamond Axe - Unenchanted Bow and Crossbow - 6 Arrows
- Damage -
Diamond Axe: - 2.5 hearts of damage when you land a full charged Critical hit - 1.5 - 1 heart of damage when you land a full charged normal hit?
Diamond Sword: - 1.5 hearts of damage when you land a full charged Critical hit - 0.5 - 1 heart of damage when you land a full charged normal hit?
Crossbow: - 1.5 hearts of damage when you land a charged hit?
Bow: - 1 heart of damage when you land a full charged hit - 0.5 heart of damage when you land a half charged hit
Although axe is clearly the most powerful option, the sword deals slightly more damage per second.?
The Shield protects from every sword hit as well as every bow and crossbow shot, yet a single axe hit, wether a critical hit or spam click, can disable it for 5 seconds, opening room for sword hits and free ranged damage
#movement-in-shield
- Movement is an important part of shield pvp because it explains why different tactics and strategies work. In this section, we will explain movement in the context of shield pvp, specifically in standoffs.?
- Horizontal Momentum and Movement -?
- Horizontal momentum mainly affects the player's ability to reach the opponent. When moving forward, it is easier to hit the other player then when moving back. When moving back, it is a lot harder to hit the opponent.?
- When it comes to shield pvp, horizontal momentum is important in standoffs. Whether you choose to sprint forward or walk back while holding up your shield in a standoff leaves you vulnerable to different offensive tactics by your opponent. When moving forward with your shield up, you are less vulnerable to stuns and other shield breaks but you are more vulnerable to backstabs, and vice versa when you are moving back. (tactics) This means that you usually have to sacrifice one kind of protection over another, and focus on dealing with the move that you are most vulnerable to.?
?- Most players opt for mixing up strafes and shield dancing during standoffs to make themselves more unpredictable. This is the best strategy so far, as it doesn’t give the enemy enough time to prepare a perfect stun/backstab. .?
- Vertical Momentum and Movement -?
- Vertical momentum affects the way knockback works in all forms of 1.9 pvp, and it is also important in shield. You take much more knockback if your momentum is up then if it is down. This is why tactics like crit-spamming and momentum breaking work so well.?
- This can also be effective when performing backstabs, but how this works is complicated. Just practicing backstabs and feeling it out for yourself is a much better way to learn it.
#tactics
- This section is all about different moves you can do to help you deal damage to your opponent. Using these well can give you a game-ending advantage. Most of these are really basic, but incorporating them into your playstyle in an effective way takes skill and practice. ?Some of these are offensive while others are defensive.?
- Most of these are with the axe as it is by far the most important weapon that you have. Other sections will cover the other weapons, but for this section we will mainly be covering stuff with the axe and shield.?
1) Autohits?
- Autohitting is extremely important in shield pvp, and is by far the most important tactic on this list.?
- Autohitting is when a player spams their attack button when their shield is up to get a free hit on their opponent when their shield gets disabled. It is extremely simple, yet it is important to learn first so that the other tactics on this list make sense. If both players are autohitting, there needs to be a way for one player to break the stalemate. Other tactics serve this purpose.?
- One interesting detail about autohitting is that it doesn't work instantly. There is a slight delay between the time your shield gets disabled and the time you actually get the hit. This means that shield breaks, if done correctly, have a high success rate against shield camping and autohitting.?
- If one player is autohitting and another isn't, then unless the player who is autohitting severely lacks in some other area like aim, the player who is autohitting will almost always win.
2) Stuns?
- Stunning is when a player double clicks or spam clicks their mouse to quickly break their opponent's shield and knock them back. It is best when performed with a double clicking mouse like a Model O, but it can still be performed by jitter or butterfly clicking.
- Double clicking requires a special kind of mouse, the most popular being the Glorious Model O, you go into the mouse’s software and set your mouse’s debounce time to 4ms and click in a special way. This will make it to where 1 click will equal 2 clicks whenever you tap your mouse button in a certain way.
- Stunning has the highest success rate when the person being stunned is either moving back or is jumping.
- When the player is moving back, they are hit out of range more quickly by a stun, and therefore don't have enough time to hit back. This is why a lot of players do weak hits before stunning.
- When a player has upward momentum, they will also be hit out of range more quickly. When stunning a player who is jumping with their shield, you should hit them right after they start their next jump to get the most amount of knockback.?
- You can still perform a stun when the player isn't moving back or jumping, but just know that it won't work as often, and you might need to add strafing so that they get hit out of your range before they can hit you.
- After performing a stun, you should press s to back out of range, and either follow up with a crit or a crossbow shot.
3) Predictions?
- Predictions are when a player hits their opponent when their opponent lowers their shield to backstab. The name is a bit wrong since it's mostly reaction time, but clues in your opponent's movement can tell you when you need to get ready.
- Usually, when your opponent starts jumping in closer with their shield or tries to strafe around you, they are trying to set up a backstab. This tells you that you need to be ready to hit them when you are sure they are going for a backstab.
- Predictions have a couple of flaws, mainly that they don't work when the range is less than 1.5 blocks. Even the prediction shown below is pretty lucky. You should do it from further away.
4) Shield dancing?
- Shield dancing refers to when a player quickly hops around their opponent, raising and lowering their shield to become unpredictable.
- This mainly serves two purposes: to be unpredictable to bait a prediction, and to move closer to set up a backstab.
- When shield dancing, you are mainly trying to get your opponent to hit your shield, so that when your shield breaks, you automatically get a free hit on them. Remember, make sure you are autohitting so that when they break your shield you immediately get a free hit.
- Shield dancing can also be used to set up a backstab. Backstabs are better at a closer range and when you have forward momentum. Shield dancing gives you both of these things.
- When shield dancing, remember to always pay attention and be ready, because a good counter to shield dancing is backstabbing in the middle of a jump to catch you off guard.
5) Instant/quick shields?
- Quick shielding is a method of breaking your opponent's shield in a safe way, where you can follow up with some other tactic to deal a lot of damage.
- To quick shield, quickly lower and raise your shield so that you can quickly hit your opponent. The goal is to disable your opponents shield while denying them the opportunity to hit you back by quickly raising your shield. You want them to hit your shield instead of hitting you, and you do this by lowering and raising your shield as fast as possible.
- To make this more effective, add a quick strafe or hop so that they have to react by moving their crosshair. If you're fast enough, they won't be able to move their crosshair in time and they will end up hitting your shield on their autohit.
- Watch in the video clip and notice how at the end is a good time to Pcrit. More info on Pcrits later.
6) Momentum breaks?
- Momentum Breaking is another method of shield breaking. It relies on jumping before you break the opponents shield so that when they get their autohit, you won't take kb because of your downward momentum. (movement-in-shield)
- Start by jumping forward toward your opponent. Then, when you are almost at the height of your jump, break their shield with one hit of your axe, don't stun. When they autohit you after you break their shield, you will take reduced knockback due to your downward momentum.?
- After this, you can basically follow up with whatever you want. A good strategy is to start criting them out with your sword. This is called crit-spamming, and it will be discussed later.
- This is an amazing shield break against people who run away. If they try to run away after they autohit you, you can crit them out.
7) Pcrits?
- Pcrits, aka punish crits, are when you crit your opponent using the vertical knockback that they gave you when they hit you. It's called punish criting because it punishes the opponent for not getting out of your range after they hit you
- To Pcrit, after you get hit, hold w while going up and release it as soon as you start falling down. Crit them while you're falling down.
- Learning when to do Pcrits is something that can only come from experience. You need to develop your own playstyle and you can't just copy everything someone else does. Pcriting is one of the most versatile tactics and has a wide range of applications.
- Pcrit chains can often happen. This is when two players end up Pcriting each other over and over again until one of them stops or dies. If you have more health then your opponent, your goal should be to try and keep them in a Pcrit chain for as long as possible. If you have less health, then you should try to get out of it as soon as possible. The best way to get out of a Pcrit chain is to strafe around your opponent and wait for them to miss. Once they miss, you can start playing normally again. However, there is no full-proof way of getting out of a Pcrit chain that will guarantee that you will come out on top, so it is usually just better to avoid getting into them in the first place.
8) Fake-outs?
- Fake-outs happen when you bait your opponent into missing an attacking crit and then normal hit them back after they miss. Basically, stay 5-6 blocks away, and when they go to crit you, back up and hit them when they touch the ground.
- After your opponent misses, they can either play defensively and try to back out, or they can try to run forward and hit you again. Both of these options don't really work and so you will almost always get the hit after they miss. One thing that they might be able to do if they are really skilled is quick shield in time so that you hit their shield instead of them. However, you don't need to worry about this because most of the time it fails even when done by expert players, and they won't get a fully charged hit anyway since they just missed.
- Combined fake-outs with strafing to make it even harder for them to hit you and so you get more successful hits.
9) Crit-chaining?
- I was debating whether or not I should put this here, but I think I should include it because not enough people use it in the axe and shield community, and it is really good when combined with shield breaks.
- Crit-chaining is a really good way of dealing a high amount of damage very quickly. Crit-chaining is when you repeatedly deal critical hits with the sword to overwhelm the opponent.
- To Crit-chain first get a crit with the sword on your opponent, then keep jumping and critting them over and over again. To take the least amount of knockback, you should hold w the entire time you are jumping until you are ready to crit them again. Also, to keep distance, strafing around them is a good idea.
10) Offhand crossbow?
- The name is pretty self explanatory, but knowing when to use it is very valuable.?
- Usually, you should put your crossbow into your offhand when you are somewhat sure that they are less than two hearts. The offhand crossbow strat can be used to guarantee you a win if you know your opponent is under two hearts.
- If your opponent is less than two hearts and you have your crossbow loaded, make sure you are out of their hit range and switch your crossbow into your offhand. If your opponent doesn't have their crossbow loaded, then you've basically won unless your aim is terrible or it lags or something. Run straight at your opponent with your crossbow in your offhand, and when you get in range, swing your axe and fire off your crossbow immediately. Either they have their shield up and you will just hit them with your axe, or you will break down their shield and your crossbow will kill them. Since there is a delay to autohits, your crossbow will always hit them before they hit you.
- The risk in this strategy is guessing that your opponent is less than two hearts. This kind of instinct comes with experience and playing lots of duels.
11) Weakhits?
- Weakhits in the context of axe and shield pvp are non fully-charged hits that have the purpose of knocking your opponent back or moving them into optimal crit positions. These can be useful for other moves like stuns that are preformed better when the player is moving backwards.
- Make sure to hit them when they are on the ground or are jumping up so that you get the most knockback.
- Spacing your hits and strafing will make it harder for your opponent to predict and counter your hit.
12) Backstabs & Shams
- Backstabbing is when a player moves behind their opponent to hit them to get around their shield. Backstabbing is the same thing as Backhitting.
- Backstabbing works best when the person being backstabbed is moving forward. Also, having forward momentum while going into a backstab makes it faster because you get behind the opponent faster. You can try strafing a bit before jumping to get this momentum. If you see that your opponent is moving forward with their shield a lot, then backstabbing is the best way to deal quick damage to them.
- There are three main types of backstabs: Crit backstabs, Normal-hit backstabs and a Sham/T-Crit. Crit backstabs are what most people are familiar with. It is quickly jumping around your opponent to deal a crit on the back side of their body. Normal-hit backstabs are when you sprint to either the side or back of the opponent and get a normal hit.
-To get the fastest backstab, I would recommend pretending like you are jumping through them instead of jumping around them. If you are too wide, then you won't be able to get behind them in time. Try your best to narrow your angle as much as possible so that your backstab is optimal. It's hard to actually jump through your opponent, but pretending that you are and narrowing the angle as much as possible is the best way to improve.
- The simplest way to deal with backstabs is to just block them, but there are two other things you can do. The first one is backstabbing on their backstab. This is when after they start backstabing, you do a backstab while they are doing it so that they miss and you get a hit. The second way is to react when they lower their shield and hit them before they can get behind you.
-A sham is a perfect solution for when you miss your autohit. To perform a sham, your opponent has to break your shield, then you follow up by jumping behind them and backstabbing. This can also be done to win pcrit chains if performed correctly. A better way to sham is when your shield gets broken, you space with S & A or S & D. Once you are properly spaced to where you can’t get hit, you can jump behind them and get a crit. This works effectively against both Offensive and Defensive playstyles.
-The way to avoid getting shammed is to weak him them after shield disabling them to keep your opponent at bay. To increase the effectiveness, you can strafe with WASD and shield in between hits, this makes it even HARDER for you to get hit.
