Presentation Abstract
Global photosynthesis is the largest carbon flux on earth, removing CO2 from the atmosphere to the biosphere and thus being critical to the mitigation of climate change. The amount of CO2 assimilated by leaf photosynthesis is dependent on ambient environmental factors (i.e. light, temperature, water) as well as the intrinsic photosynthetic capacity (i.e. maximum carboxylation rate; Vcmax25) of leaves. Such a biochemical process of photosynthesis has been well described by established models such as Farquhar’s model at the leaf scale. However, at the global scale, we find estimates of photosynthesis from earth system models vary in a large range, accompanied by substantial discrepancies in estimated trends and variability, indicating large uncertainty in the modelling of global photosynthesis and the global carbon budget. In this presentation, we will identify several key sources of uncertainty in modelling global photosynthesis: 1) light distribution within a canopy, 2) spatial and temporal variations in Vcmax25 and 3) acclimation of photosynthesis to intermediate/long-term light condition, and address these issues respectively using a simplified radiative transfer theory, remote sensing-derived leaf chlorophyll content and an ecological optimality theory.
