Why am I so angry about not having a very high IQ (mine is 85) and I envy those who have it high?

All that said, there is still a part of me that is envious. I want to be the best I can be, and it hurts to realize that I’m a painfully slow learner. I have extreme difficulty with numbers, and I get frustrated when I cannot fully grasp certain concepts. Sometimes I must review complicated things multiple times, and I get confused easily. I start to hate myself for being so stupid. I also get tricked easily.

To be honest with you, these are minor problems that I have. there are other issues that are more important. For example, I have never learned to work hard at school. I have been a class topper for 8 years and without really working hard for it. You might think that it’s perfect but you must know that at some point in your life you need to work hard in order to achieve certain goals. I know my dream is to become a doctor and I know that I’m talented enough to do it but I have had a lot of troubles with it and have not been able to become a med student after 4 years of trying.

You see, they say that we humans avoid anything that threatens our identity. So because being smart is my identity, anything that threatens it can frighten me and make me back away from it. Studying can be a good example of this matter. I have the ability to learn any difficult subject that I want, but because being smart is my identity, fear of failure paralyzes me and prevents me from studying hard. I prefer to fail because I haven’t studied enough rather then fail despite studying because if I study a lot and fail, my identity as a smart person is threatened and that thought makes me want to procrastinate and avoid studying. Sometimes, I wish that I wasn’t as smart as I am. Sometimes, I wish I had an average IQ.

I think we can work ourselves up to be unhappy and envious about pretty well anything if we put enough effort into it.
It seems to me that you are holding down a very decent job, have a good solid career, and doubtless enjoy many of the benefits that go with this. It is something to be proud of, no matter what your IQ. Did you know that there are many geniuses out there homeless in the freezing cold, living under a bridge with a cardboard box for a home? Are you really envious that their IQ is so much higher than yours?…

You have a fantasized abstract notion of what a high IQ person is. There is far more to life and success than a high IQ. You and a person with double your IQ might take on a certain type of task, and you might far outperform, because the job calls for skills beyond just raw IQ alone.
High IQ has its downsides. You are far more likely to fit in better with overall society than a person with a high IQ. You will be less prone to being alone, friendless, and engaging in massive over-thinking leading to inaction than a person with an extreme IQ. You may be more tolerant and more humane with others than such a person.

You know, to this very day, I continue to feel somewhat down on myself due to the fact that I never went to Oxford or Cambridge University (in UK), but just to a provincial university. It was a source of very great shame to me at the time, and still is a little bit, although I keep it well concealed. Even now, when I hear that someone went to Oxford or Cambridge, I feel it inside me.

This is despite the fact that I hold a PhD in Nuclear Physics, did a job in Investment Banking with a six-figure salary for several years, and authored a couple of books. So you see, we can upset ourselves and feel inferior about absolutely anything, if we put our minds to it, can’t we?
Did you know that all the Nazi leaders were people with high IQs - some extremely high - and they all without exception rated Hitler as a genius i.e. smarter than them? Can you be angry and jealous about them all having a higher IQ than yours? I hope not, and I doubt it. They did not put their genius to very good use, did they?
So, look to what you have in life with thankfulness and seek to expand upon it. You probably are doing very well in areas of life that do not involve high IQ. Be happy about it. If the matter continues to upset you, read Tony Buzan’s “Book of Genius” and you will find out that there are many different measures of intelligence apart from IQ, and you almost certainly rank very highly on them.

Why are you angry about not having a higher IQ and envious of those who do? - because you are comparing yourself to others. You are looking at what is “deficient in you” (in your mind) rather than “acknowledging and working on your strengths”. Possibly because others have pressured or berated you for not living up to their expectations on what it is to be successful according to societies standards. Forget them and listen not, as success and our worth is not measure by “IQ”. It is measured by doing our best with what we have that enhances our lives and that of others.

We “all” have are own unique abilities, strengths and talents that can enhance our lives and others, and not all necessarily incorporates a high IQ; - find yours, nurture it, believe in yourself and go out into the world and shine “being you”. No one else can do that.
Just because someone has a higher IQ does not make them better than you. As with any gift we possess it is “how we use it” and whether it serves to benefit others or the world in some way, that offers the most value.

Imagine this scenario. There is a homeless, hungry man sitting on the footpath adjoining a main road. Joe Blow, who is a genius, walks briskly by and ignores the man’s plea for help, through either looking down on him or is embarrassed to be seen with him. Then another person walks by who may be of average intelligence and stops to talk to the man. She/he recognises that he is hungry and thirsty and buys the man food, offering it to him and some water. Who do you think is more worthy and of value to the homeless man? He does not care about the intellect of the person, but how someone came along and made his life a bit brighter offering kindness and meeting his needs at that time. Who is the better more valuable person in this situation?

The intellect does not make the man or woman - the heart does. And how we use any gift we are born with. If we use our intellect and/or talents (it may be with our deeds or hands) offering something of value through it - is of higher worth than just bragging rights. Stop comparing yourself to others and just become the best version of you, and go out and make your mark on the world and be happy. It is all that is required to living a fulfilled life.

Mine is, or at least was, pretty high. Maybe 150. Not Stephen Hawking but it got me an Ivy League degree in physics, and I can stop working at 40. Here’s the thing about IQ… it basically says how fast can you come up with and eliminate incorrect solutions to certain types of puzzle problems. If you can do that fast, either by training or by birth, then they give you a good score. And for sure, there are some high paying jobs that demand this kind of work, so having a high IQ gives you a better shot at those.

But that’s kind of a danger. Because this kind of work can give high IQ people a false sense of success. And therefore they don’t develop other abilities that are just as important - emotional intelligence especially. So then you end up being a high IQ brain slave to people who have developed better relationship skills. These people are called managers.

The other big thing I’ve learned is that intense focus is the single most important metric for achieving a goal. By goal I mean something real and important - curing cancer, building an electric car, raising a healthy family. Having a high IQ doesn’t mean you have focus. The low IQ person with focus on a goal will beat the multi tasking high IQ person every time. Taking the time to plan and prioritize your effort is way, way more important than solving technical puzzles quickly. If you have focus and relationships, you’ll hire high IQ people to work on those things. You will be their boss.
