端午節(jié)吃粽子
Zongzi, a pyramid-shaped Chinese traditional rice-dumpling, is mainly made of?glutinous rice and?wrapped by bamboo or reed leaves.
Eating zongzi is a must do custom in China. Maybe most laowai orforeigners?are curious about this little pyramid. They may wonder whyChinese people are so interested in?this funny nest. So, please don't forget to peel off the skin before you open your mouth.
How to make zongzi?
This is how to make one type of zongzi.
1)have bamboo leaves watered.粽葉先浸水。
2)Fill the boat shape leaf with a few tablespoons of the soaked sticky rice. Top with a sprinkling of mung beans.在船型粽葉中填入幾勺浸濕的糯米,再加少許綠豆。
3)Add some smoked meat and shrimps.再加入腌制過的肉和蝦。
4)Packed it with line with three, four, or five angles.用線把粽子裹起來,可以做成三角、四角或五角。
5)Boiled them, first with big fire, then turn to small fire till rip.然后再進(jìn)行蒸煮,先用大火,再轉(zhuǎn)成小火直到粽子殼開裂。

There is a great variety of Zongzi in different regions. Different places have different types. People may stuff all kinds of filling they like to make zongzi a special treat with authentic flavor and taste for their families.

據(jù)統(tǒng)計(jì),端午節(jié)的名稱達(dá)二十多個,如有端五節(jié)、端陽節(jié)、重五節(jié)、重午節(jié)、當(dāng)五汛、天中節(jié)、夏節(jié)、五月節(jié)、菖節(jié)、蒲節(jié)、龍舟節(jié)、浴蘭節(jié)、屈原日、午日節(jié)、女兒節(jié)、地臘節(jié)、詩人節(jié)、龍日、午日、燈節(jié)、五蛋節(jié)等等。

As different zongzi has different filling, this festival also has a great variety of names both in Chinese and in English, which may give you a shock.
Such as the Duanwu Festival,?Duanyang Festival, Tianzhong Festival, Yulan Festival, Duanwu Festival and Daughter's Day,ect.
This festival is as important as the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Chinese people usually and traditionally celebrate historical date on lunar calendar. This day falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese traditional lunar calendar.?It's the first Chinese festival selected in World Intangible Cultural Heritage. Also people don't need to work for the reason that it is one of the national holidays too.

The legends of origination of this festival circulated through the whole ancient history from Qv Yuan to the dragon.
1.Qv Yuan
The hero, a great patriotic poet, a minister lived in the Chu State duringWarring States Period (475-221 BC) of ancient China.?
Qv Yuan with the brave spirit of throwing himself into the river showed hisinnocent heart against the court corruption.
Neighbors in town rowed their boats desperately but tried in vain to savehim.
With the broken heart, neighbors?scattered rice into the river, hopingto distract hungry fish, prevented them from eating his body.

2.Wu Zixu
A general?lived in?the Wu state?during?the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC)?of ancient China.

3.Gou Jian
A king,?suffered great humiliation,?lived in?the Yue state?during the Spring and Autumn Period?(770-476BC).

4.Cao E
A?filial Chinese traditional female, lived in the Eastern Han Dynasty(25-220)
Being hopeless of seeing the body of her drowned father, she threw herself into the river like Qv Yuan too.

5.Dragon
As the oldest festival in China, people started celebrating this moment from?Autumn Period (770-476 BC) of ancient China.?
The leaders of ancestors in those large tribes treated dragon as their moral worship and flag, and declared themselves as the?descendants of the dragon. The famous leaders represent the dragon tribe are Fu Xi, Nv Wa, Yu, and so on.

6.Wen Yiduo
The famous?Chinese?poet has pointed his view in his works of Duanwu Test?and?Duanwu?Historical Education .
He says, Duanwu is the festival of?commemorating dragon.

7.Public Health
With the remarkable achievement in civilization, more and more people pay strong attention on their health condition. Going to the gym, cooking at home and doing aerobics are becoming as the necessary?activities on the way of keeping fit.
Traditional customs are closely related to these demands.
What do we do on this day?
Nowadays, people deem these activities not only as a way of honoring ancestors but also as a way of getting rid of evils, showing care for people,building their bodies, dispelling diseases, protecting life and health.
