4. Painting Methods---1-4.Find Edges & Cutout Filter

P34 - 00:00?

?Let me show you how you can also use finding edges and cut out the filter to kind of make another set of shortcuts.?

So let's start with this simple, very kind something very abstract,?

let’s say just implying that this is something like a gun, some couple of shapes.?

So as I told you before, the problem with the limitation of the shape language is that you really don't know what form it has.?

So I showed you that using light, like finding edges filter, you can convert this one into a line drawn.?

and also using combination of those which will be finding edges plus kind of filter.?

You can actually convert those and simplify. ?

The great thing is that if you keep applying finding edges and cuddled filter after like just repeatedly applying those, it will start a create a really nice form as well. It will start to give you ideas about how this shape actually looks as a cross section.?

It's like doing a babbling in 3D, because we know all hard surface stuff. It has some kind of bevel to it.?

So let's just repeat it a few times. Like just create a new layer. For example, use a different brush. ?

Maybe it's something. And applied this guy replied once it looks like this, and then you keep applying. Keep going, keep giving different ideas. It is really, really cool because this is something you would do afterwards by applying textures and like different forms as well. But this automated process that gives you a really nice idea from the very beginning.

?

So let's say if you're doing an abstract shapes like this. And then. Let's just cut out this guy.?

You apply those filters, 12345.?

And then you distort this guy. So this guy could be yes, if sun five panel somewhere.?

And because it has this kind of implied thickness, it does give you a lot of Information that and you would never kind of end up with this kind of result.?

If you were doing it manually, you would end up, but it would take interest more time than you had spent by just applying the filter.?

And then you will start giving it a little bit more love and love and just refined. And t hen converted towards whatever you want.?

So it's a very, very good tool to start refining your form in a kind of artificial way, not consciously,?

like learning and mastering how to paint and how to describe forms take ages.?

It just takes a lot of really serious work. And I always appreciate that work. But I keep saying, in order to tell your stories, you don't need to be a master of painting.?

That's why this course is not about painting, even though I'm showing you a lot of drawing and painting tips, I'm also giving you a lot of kind of shortcuts that we will be constantly using to kind of create something unique,?

but spend less time on that show skill sets, for example, you can take this one. And now you have a very complicated shape derived from a very simple blocked out kind of shape, that I did over here now stretch this guy. you have some very cool 5 platform, which is looks cool because there is a lot of graphic design going on. There is a lot of repetition. There is a lot of contrast. There is a lot of those good guys that we talked about when I was explaining new design principles.?

So balance time to use, though, instead of painting from scratch, like imagine if you were doing this all these guy from scratch.?

It just needs a lot of accuracy. like it just needs a lot of time to kind of get to this level. But once you've got that Information, all you need to do is just start refining.?

you'll start kind of seeing things because you flatten it out, you will start actually to describe the form much better.? this goes inside kind of overlapping those using same design language like come up with a really cool thing.?

And it will not take you ages to take it much less time because he is spending you making short conservancy is spending more time on designing things rather than improving your painting skill.?

let me give you a final example, which is very similar to what I did here. But It's also very useful. For example, let's make shape like this.?

and then let's apply the final edges filter. let's just cut out this.?

I like this method. It’s very it keeps you abstract, but it gives you a lot of kind of potential in terms of how you can generate really nice designs without actually being very great painter. ?

Which takes forever painting, learning how to paint and draw. As I said from the very beginning, it's not something you will learn in eight weeks.?

It just you need more time. Ability, like learning how to design and make it design choices.?

This is something that you can learn in the course. And this is what I'm concentrating on. And this is why this course is called narrative concept design. It's all about narrative and ideas.?

So let's go back to this shape and apply just like line drawing tool.?

So as you see, it's really cool, but we still don't know what for me to ask what is the thickness of this object??

And if you start applying cutout filter, like if you go to, so first we apply the finding fine edges.?

And the second option, we will apply kind of a filter,?

which is in my probably need to share these actions with you guys. So you will just plug them in and you will have them working.?

So in my world, it's a Free. So you can see when I expand this. through once? a filter gallery cut out. So it start to cut out, And it starts to give me this kind of edge over here. But keep going like this. Basically what I start seeing it gives me a very natural thickness.?

And whenever you do a line drawing, you'll we kind of try to introduce line thickness variety,?

like mastering that one. It is really difficult like some people. Very good. Will line thickness, because this is what makes your pictures beautiful. And also this is what helps you to describe the form.?

Because once we know the shape like this, once we have the training, we know that the light is coming from here.because this guy is dark.?

And instead of doing it manually, what we basically did, we did the shape, like for example, the shape itself,?

we purely designed the shape. And instead of trying to make it like this manually,?

we applied one filter and then a few times cut out the filter.?

Now we know that this kind of mechanical part has this really nice thickness to it. This could potentially be front or something like that.?

You see, that's pretty much completes a line drawing versus a shape language.?

Then in the next chapter, which will be the last one for this lesson, I will just show you different examples of quick ones, which will help you to kind of set your mind Free in the abstract and using those two methods create some really nice stories and designs.?

?

4. Painting Methods---1-5.Textures from Filters

P35 - 00:00?

?so let me show you more examples. And so you will see how fining edges and the cutoff filter just helps us to automate our posts,?

purely concentrate on design rather than the technical bits.?

So as you remember, our first design element will shape and then form, using line drawing.?

And then now we need a texture as well. So that's why instead of using a flat brush, what will be using? We will be using some texture brushes and deal with together with the line with the fining edges and Kettle filter will give us some really nice textures and suggestions. ?

So let’s creepy bloke out something very quickly using architecture like a very texture brush. so now let's apply fining edges.?

And you see, when we applied it on, it gives you a lot of the smaller effects that actually gives you some not only form, because it gives you a lot of like small lines that can describe the form, but also it gives you a lot of textures as well,?

which could help you to reinforce overall graphic design and to get to the final image much quicker.?

Then you would care if you were trying to paint all this stuff from scratch. So for example, let's take this guy and apply cutout filter.? And you see the way it's simplified it, just the way it handles the texture helps you a lot. Because when you zoom out, it can actually start to look like a proper line drawing, like something you would do with the traditional media. Or you can take both of these guys. ?

I think I need to go back to shape again. So I'll copy more merge everything. Go back a couple of times. Go back to our shape extent bring back those and now I will take on the original, put it over here. So we started with this one. It's a purely silhouette, like this one, which is more like, somewhere in between. But it gives us a lot of textual kind of Information as well. So we can keep experimenting. Let's say that supply both of those, at the center. so we've get this, but let's apply, for example, finding edges first, which is F1 and hit a couple of times,?

cut out filter. So it will even simplify it even more. For example, if you were doing like a sketch with the rocks, you don't need to spend ages trying to get those rocks right. it will give you all you need. It will give you the base. All you need to do is just to refine it a little bit to give, to put some variety and stuff like that. ?

So let's try something more complicated. For example, if you're doing a character design, let's pick up the texture brush again. And we will start putting some instead of like purely using because some people they really don't understand how they don't see light, they see shapes. And we'll start with the shape, no lines purely shapes. And we will put some silhouette of a character. And then we will put some graphic design is very abstract, nothing very specific. It's all about getting those lines and stuff like that. Like those intersection. Let's say this guy has a spear. As you can see, it's very rough, very ugly, very kind of simple and quickly done sketch. And it's not very graphically, doesn't look very good as a graphic design, but that's not the point.?

That's why I keep saying, you don't need to be a very good painter to become a good designer or storyteller. So what we will do? We’ll take this guy, and once again, also, don't forget we have no light Information on this one. It's not like these guys are being lit or something. So many problems. They struggle with values and photorealism. That's why I really strongly suggest if you struggle with photographic stylize. because stylized is much more forgiving. And you can do great things with stylize things as well. So let's find edges first.?

Let's of course, cut out this guy. He's on a separate layer, finding edges. it's already giving you a lot of the small things, but we want to take it further. Cut out. How about finding edges together. ?

these guys more. It just looks like this guy looks too digitized. but this guy looks more like you would see in the manga.?

it’s very close. It's not like miles away from it. And we can go on. take this guy again. This is over here. copy merge.?

And let's supply cathode filter a few times. So we apply the filter edges once, and we hit cut out.hit cut out, hit cut out. So we're losing details and also thickening the line, which might be the thing that we want to do,?

And as you can see it start with giving you a lot of cool things. You know what I mean? Like it giving you so much of suggested details. And all you need to do is you need to just go and simplified it, like you are already having like suggestion of the form as well. And for example, if you start merging, which I will be showing later on. You will start getting like folds and all that stuff. The stuff you don't really want to spend time painting because your overall effort should be concentrated on the on the idea on the character of this kind not those technical aspects of painting and drawing.?

And now you start with this is it. you're already having a very good base. All you need to do is just start refining, refining, and refining. But it's already there. everything you might need when you zoom out. For example, if you twist, because you can select the areas of the flat surfaces, you can start introducing some graphic designs as well.?

And then at any point, if you won't go to go back to the line drawing, you can do it easily.?

Just compare how this guy changes from these very primitive thing, which is very easy to do. Everybody can do this, to something more elegant and more kind of, it looks like I worked at this guy like for way more time than I actually spent on it. and then you go to line drawing. Sometimes it doesn't work. It means you've got a lot of details.?

So You need to experiment with those who get the best result of it.?

I've been doing a final example with a different brush, which I think is a very good one to kind of bringing those implied details and help you to get the abstract shapes that will afterwards help you to creative final design. So basically this brush is good because it gives you a really nice variety between the thin and thick lines.?

And for example, and this is the kind of the method when you actually instead of trying to do very abstract shapes, you actually paint what you think you need to paint. for example, I want to do a human head. But instead of really following the human head like this. no, I'm just painting a human that like I know the feeling that there is a brain inside and the more like of those cross sections you introduce, it will give you much better results when you convert it to a line drawing.?

For now like I wanna paint and I go and I know the lips, stuff like that. And like same with the like, I know there are folds. Instead of painting them with very consciously, I'm just blocking them out. Then trousers and stuff like that.? Hold on. Just a second. Let’s apply fine edges,?

using this, let's combine those two. Or maybe this is a good one. Perhaps I need to cut this guy out. Let's just quickly to separate some forms. ?

now let's play, it gives a lot of Information that just something you would never get from them. As quickly as you did it. Now, if you will consciously painting these things and you can experiment with those, for example.? Like these, you can bring them back and multiply on top of painting. You will start getting a lot of like simple implied details that is really hard to get. If you're doing it from scratch.? For example. Now I realize that, okay, probably I won't be facing like looking mainly towards us. And now together with shape or form texture. You're also getting like some light Information. It's not a real light. The way you see it, your brain starts to kind of filling the gaps. doing it from scratch, you're doing it from something you see already. Like for example, look at this. you already can see the lighting and stuff like that. And it keeps adding those details and painting.?

It would take much more time. If you were doing this from scratch and trying to kind of first do a line drawing, then put all the lighting, you can start kind of refining it. It just doesn't work that way for me, because it takes me away from the main purpose, the design of the storytelling. ?

Now you can select the background as well. So just from a simple shape, in a couple of minutes, I can move towards a much more realistic painting because I’m using the smart kind of shortcuts that allow me to move on and to concentrate on the design first.?

and the story with us rather than the real issue is that properly, see the proportions. And also when it comes down and people keep asking me all I need to know anatomy very well to kind of do that stuff like this. You do need to know that.?

I mean you didn't need to know proportions, but because we are not constructing stuff from scratch. ?

We are not constructing stuff from scratch. That's why it kind of helps us to see. Because we know when something is off in many cases human eye can say okay, that’s wrong.?

And when you are doing it from scratch. It's very difficult to do it because you're doing it yourself. And you're constantly thinking and making decisions. And sometimes they are wrong. But when the program does it for you. Like it does cutout filter and all that stuff for you. Then you can easily spot or something is off. ?

So that's why. Try those out and you will see the way how powerful they are. And how just? from simple shape like this. And if you squint my eyes when zoom out, this looks very convincing. This looks something I would see my final illustration. But it all started from a simple Syria. And using cut out and finding edges, it gave me form and give me a lot of colour Information.?

It gave me texture Information as well. So yeah, that kind of concludes the battle between line drawing and shapes, which is both of them are very strong. They support each other.?

And if you stay smart and use different like shortcuts, you can be less concentrating on the painting phase and more concentrating on final designs and story telling, which is the purpose of this lesson of this course as well.

?

4. Painting Methods---1-6.Using Photo Reference

P36 - 00:00?

I decided to include this bonus video for you guys, And, I keep talking about this old short cards. And at some point we will hit the point where I will be showing you how to use photos and stuff like that,?

but also finding edges and cut out filters. A very good way to simplify your photos.?

And to, for example, convert this kind of photograph to almost like a line drawing.?

And let me show you how to do it, basically, all you need is a good photo reference that you like. And for example, let's see, if you're designing things, you can heavily modified the photo, ?

for example, you can take make and they can make this building, for example, bigger.?

Without worrying too much about all the kind of color and value and all that stuff, you can redesign this frame completely,?

Like for example, make a side by side a little bit like like just quickly sketching and painting and just color picking from this photo,?

which is why we kind of use photos, because they give us a really nice base and stuff like that. I will not spend too much time on it. Just a quick sum couple of like really interesting and judgement and stuff like that.?

Anyway. And now let's say it's at some point, you need to convert it to a line drawing because don't forget the less kind of attributes and features you have inside your picture done. The more time and chance you have to play with the design.?

So because right now you see I sketched on Top of a few things. And they just look like they're being sketched on Top of it, because I need to spend more time to actually kind of refining them and make them look like this photo.?

Instead of doing that, we will go and simplify it. So we'll just go and use fine edges. If we use fine edges, we've got this.?

It looks too noisy to me. And usually use it with conjunction with the cutout filter like I did before.?

So basically, I apply first. I apply a fine edges.?

So we just curve miss the bark. fine edges. And now we go stylize, fine edges. ?

And now we go to the filter, build a gallery, and apply cutout filter. So place the settings over here, it will give you different amount of detaining and stuff like that. So but overall it gives very solid base.?

And it just looks like a line drawing. It could look like some of the cure comics. And you need to do. For example, And now you can easily design because you're having less Information. You can go and start playing with it as you want. It just looks cool, because it's simple. ?

Now, because everything looks like a line drawing, you have more flexibility in terms of introducing something a little blue like alien as it was looking because before it was just everything was just photo real and to bring it to the level of photorealism it takes some time and experience, which you don't want to kind of spend time on. This one. It just looks way more graphic. ?

And because you have all these flat areas, you can start introducing a hint of clouds,?

just stylizing everything heavily. just making like a comic book, but using photos, it's a big shortcut. instead of trying to redraw the photos, we steal photos.?

We just use them straight away. Can you get this simplified, nice composition. So I just felt like I know we're not in the photo world yet, but showing you how to simplify by using line drawing process shapes method, you can have really nice things.?

And as I said, you can still like combine those together very heavily. Like for example, you can have this one. And then. I apply just cut out the filter to it. Then you got another different graphic look.?

Or you can set it and multiply. And you got like it. You could color lighting Information.?

You see all the shadow, all the highlights and shadows, kind of having a proper representation because you're simplifying the photos were making like a simple version of the film.?

Now then it's probably worth going back and refining these clouds. So they obeyed. They have the same lighting kind of scenario.?

This is the way you use photos to simplify them. And this is the way we do photo quickly and efficiently. So let's move on and thank you very much.?
